In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. …(Genesis 1:1-31 ESV)
REFLECTION
Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend a surreal and somewhat inspiring high-tech, immersive media art exhibition at a swanky spot. The artists were clearly inspired by God’s glorious handiwork. They had created an immersive experience whereby we entered into a digital expression of rolling waves in one room, a forest with ethereal versions of deer, birds and tigers in another, and one full of flowers, butterflies and shooting stars…
I appreciated all the creative efforts involved and the evident pursuit of excellence and new ideas (which can spark greater, more helpful ideas) – however – one thought stayed with me as I made my way to the exit: The real thing is much better.
The purpose of some experiences is to point us to something better. Instead of a digital rendition, I’d much rather immerse myself in God’s actual handiwork, be it walking along a real beach with the sounds of seagulls and real rolling waves or pausing in a pretty park to delight in a dancing butterfly or walking through a real forest to the tune of real birds singing their praises to our Maker. The reality of our Creator’s amazing artistry is all around us. As we go about our day, may we stay in a blessed state of wonder and deep appreciation, marvelling at the handiwork of our marvellous Maker – the greatest Artist.
