The Breath of Life

“Then the Lord God took dust from the ground and formed a man from it [there is wordplay between “ground” (adama) and “man” (adam)]. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nose, and the man became a living person.” [Genesis 2:7 EXB]

REFLECTION

We are first, before any doing takes place, beloved works of art, fashioned by our loving Creator. We did not make ourselves. We did not breathe life into ourselves. The breath in our lungs is from our Maker. We literally breathe by the grace of God. Every breath is a gift of grace.

Our true identity is found in Christ: knowing Christ and knowing who we are in Him. Only when we are deeply abiding in Christ can we truly be free and fruitful. I’m often reminded of how dangerous it is to tether our identity to other things, shifting things, fleeting things, instead of seeking to stay deeply connected to Christ, without whom we cannot bear lasting, eternal fruit. “For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18).

Regardless of how long we have been Christians, we need to remain alert and vigilant, irrespective of age or stage, while we are pilgrims on this planet. So, come what may, let’s stay in the battle for truth, for truth triumphs because Jesus Christ Himself said: “I am the way, the truth and the life…” (John 14:6).

PRAYER POEM: In the Light

My marvellous Maker, search me and reveal to me anything that I need to let go, so that You I may better know.

We breathe, we work, we grow in grace and enter into what You call us to, all because of You.

Keep me in the light of Your incomparable love, with my mind set on things above.
