Lowly Love

Though the Lord is exalted,
He regards the lowly [and invites them into His fellowship];
But the proud and haughty He knows from a distance.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me;
You will stretch out Your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
And Your right hand will save me.
The Lord will accomplish that which concerns me;

Your [unwavering] lovingkindness, O Lord, endures forever—
Do not abandon the works of Your own hands. [Psalm 138:6-8 AMP]

REFLECTION

Word Study: lowly

Hebrew: šāp̄āl – low, humble [Strong’s H8217]

After pondering this passage, I was moved to ask the Lord to search my heart and uproot every weed of pride and plant seeds of lowly love, so that my awareness of His sovereignty grows in His glorious grace.

The insidious sin of pride is particularly dangerous because it can slither in even while we sincerely go about doing good (and sacrificial) works. Oh, let’s not go down that slippery slope, but hold on tight to our Living Hope, ardently aware that it is only by His grace that we live, move and have our being, and are saved, and continually saved.

PRAYER POEM: Low

Lord, let love move us to go low, our hearts humble, inclined to grow in Your glow of grace, in our purpose and place.

Help us not to fear, only draw near and You, our Sovereign Saviour, revere.

Oh Loving Lord, let Your beauty blaze within us and amaze us as we are readied to run, oh Holy One.
