“Then the people brought their little children to Jesus so he could put [lay] his hands on them [an act of blessing] and pray for them. [But] His followers [disciples] told them to stop [scolded/rebuked them], but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me. Don’t stop [hinder] them, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to people who are like these children [meaning humble and dependent].” (Matthew 19:13-14 EXB)
REFLECTION
Many years ago, I got my CELTA teaching qualification so that I could teach, travel and write about my experiences, which I did (and do). However, after teaching countless children year in and year out, it became very clear that the children I taught were becoming my little teachers, inadvertently teaching me how to become patient, humble and dependent on God, the One who sustains us all. As I helped needy children, I was helped. As I prayerfully disciplined wayward little ones, I too became more disciplined. Over time my priorities began to shift from selfishness to sacrificial service, from proud independence to more deeply connecting with my Maker and those He lovingly made. And while life, this side of heaven, is a churning mix of mystery, mercy, messy moments, mountaintop victories, deep dark valleys of difficulty and everything in between, I know — with unshakable certainty — that Jesus is “…the way and the truth and the life…” (see John 14:6) And the children that He so cherishes have helped to deeply root this truth in my heart.
PRAYER POEM
Loving Lord Jesus, You are the only perfect One, the sovereign Son. Teach me Your ways, all of my days. Soften and open my heart to receive whatever You want to impart, for You can work in and through anyone, including a humble little one.
