“Understand this, my beloved brothers and sisters. Let everyone be quick to hear [be a careful, thoughtful listener], slow to speak [a speaker of carefully chosen words and], slow to anger [patient, reflective, forgiving]; for the [resentful, deep-seated] anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God [that standard of behavior which He requires from us].” James 1:19-20 AMP
REFLECTION
I haven’t always listened well. At times I’ve been so focused on what I wanted to say and do, that I forgot that it’s wise to be quick to listen and slow to speak.
When we actively listen, we have the opportunity to experience a more meaningful connection with the person speaking, learn something and be better informed when we do speak. I’ve come to deeply appreciate active listening, not only when it involves other people, but also in my private time with my Maker. During times of private prayer and pondering, I’ve often prayed something like: “I’m listening, Lord…” and then I’d be quiet and wait for Him to speak to my heart. As life unfolds, let’s prioritise actively listening to our loving Lord, and learn to lovingly listen to others.
PRAYER POEM
LORD, I’m so grateful that You are deeply concerned about me and every precious person I see. Help me to listen well and to speak the truth, infused with love from above.
In Your name, Jesus, amen.
