“…be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.” (James 1:22-24 ESV)
REFLECTION
I’ve always been a word person. I love reading, pondering and working with words. I love to get immersed in a good true story (or a parable that is infused with truth) or soak up hard won wisdom from a fellow writer, eager to glean insight and understanding. And my forever favourite book is The Book of all books, The Bible. Timeless and true. I’ve always loved reading and hearing words of wisdom, but I haven’t always been a doer of what I’ve read or heard. It’s easy to read and agree with …
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32 NIV)
…but it’s not always easy to actually do it, especially if you’re having a day dodging curve balls coming out of nowhere. But, praise God, it is possible to truly be hearers and doers of God’s Word, as we prioritise our relationship with Him and intentionally spend time in prayer and ponder His living and active Word, so that His truth goes down deep and works wonders in and through us, which includes loving correction. So as we move forward in faith, hope and love, determined to do what we know to be true, we can trust that the One who made and loves us is also with us, guiding and helping us to be hearers and doers of His wonderful Word.
PRAYER POEM
Loving Lord ~ may all that I think, say and do glorify You. For Your Word is now and forever true, and is the reason why we can be blessed and brimming with faith, hope and love, irrespective of what we go through.
