Growing Gratitude

“Never stop praying. Give thanks no matter what happens. God wants you to thank him because you believe in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 NIRV)

REFLECTION

When everything unfolds as we had hoped, and all seems and feels good in our sphere of influence, then thanksgiving springs up rather easily. But, when we find ourselves dealing with unpleasant realities and fluctuating feelings, then it takes intentionality to grow gratitude. The hopeful reality is that as we intentionally sow seeds of eternal truth (in thought, word and deed), we cultivate thanksgiving to God, who never disappoints, and we can better recognise and uproot wicked weeds of disappointment and resentment that try to choke the beautiful buds of gratitude. So, irrespective of our state and situation, let’s prayerfully tend to our hearts and grow the kind of gratitude that is not dependent on eternal happenings, but rather relies on the light of God’s Word and nourishment from the Holy Spirit.

PRAYER POEM: Thank You

Lord, You are always perfectly trustworthy and true, which is why I can always say: Thank You.

May Your light of truth shine in every dark part of my heart and cause me to always sing: How great Thou art.
