Active Persistence

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who by faith have testified to the truth of God’s absolute faithfulness], stripping off every unnecessary weight and the sin which so easily and cleverly entangles us, let us run with endurance and active persistence the race that is set before us, [looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith [the first incentive for our belief and the One who brings our faith to maturity], who for the joy [of accomplishing the goal] set before Him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God [revealing His deity, His authority, and the completion of His work].” [Hebrews 12:1-2 AMP]

REFLECTION

How would you define active persistence?

I’m writing this while waiting for my number (A86) to come up at the bank. I arrived more than 30 minutes ago and was pleased to see the numbers changing at a rather rapid rate, until it hit A84, and then nothing — for more than 20 minutes — and still I stand, waiting. I could sigh, grumble and get irritated while keeping my eyes glued to the number board or I could practice active persistence, in faith, by guarding my heart with gratitude instead of grumbling; by staying mindful of God’s goodness; by allowing patience to do its work in me; by being kind and courteous to those around me; and by making the best use of the time while I wait — which includes writing this devotional, with a view to encouraging others. And if we happen to lose our patience along the way, it can be found! We can turn to our loving Lord for help, for He knows exactly what we truly need, when we need it and why. So, come what may, “…let us run with endurance and active persistence the race that is set before us, [looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith…”

PRAYER POEM

LORD, thank You for every opportunity to grow and more deeply You and Your ways know. Show me the way I should go and keep me close to You, whether I’m feeling low or enjoying a mountaintop moment, all aglow.
