“But I say to the unmarried and to the widows, [that as a practical matter] it is good if they remain [single and entirely devoted to the Lord] as I am. But if they do not have [sufficient] self-control, they should marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.” (1 Corinthians 7:8-9 AMP)
REFLECTION
Not everyone is called to earthly marriage.
Each believer has a unique story and calling, and has a place and purpose in the body of Christ…irrespective of whether they are single and serving (for their entire life on earth) or married and serving. It seems that Paul makes it clear, in 1 Corinthians 7:8-9, that it’s good to remain single and devoted to the Lord. I think it would be wise if we don’t put pressure on single believers to get married, but rather encourage them to devote themselves to the Lord, and trust that He will guide them according to His plans for their lives.
Our Maker clearly loves diversity, evident in nature and every living being. So let’s cultivate unity in diversity, without forsaking the truth of God’s Word. Let’s prayerfully ponder the entire book of 1 Corinthians (and not just focus on the parts that confirm the choices we have made) and ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten and lead us into all truth.
PRAYER POEM: Higher
Lord, here is my heart: shine Your light and heal any dark part.
Help me fully yield to You and wholeheartedly do the work You’ve called me to.
Your ways are infinitely higher…keep me tethered to You, now and forever.
